Considering the track record of Tunze pump there shouldn't be any problem with someone buying one. Can't say the same for the Vortex.

I also feel that people are cutting them some slack because they're made by Icecap. If any other company was making them, and had that many problems from the get go, people would be bashing them.

Definately call icecap or send an e-mail to their service dept. They are really good and they'll walk you through fixing it. It sounds to me like you've got the spacer set wrong. The plastic piece that has the "finger marks" on it is adjustable to compensate for different thickness of glass. If you have it set wrong the magnet will be too close or too far and it will cause this kind of behavior. If you pull that plastic housing off the dry end you'll see a sticker that shows where to set it for each thickness of glass.

I've had mine for about a year and it stopped only once because it needed to be cleaned (badly). I just ordered another one yesterday to replace the Tunze 6100 that runs on the other side of the tank.

FWIW my 2 year old 6100 is fried. It stopped working in the middle of the night, the alarm didn't sound, and the transformer became so hot that the rubber coating started to melt. I'm sure Vortech has it's issues but Tunze is definitely not a problem free piece of equimpment. I am thinking about getting the Vortech but I would say 75% of the guys I know have problems or had problems with them. After reading posts from Randy and Fred I am tempted to pull the trigger :)

I've seen posts of nothing but problems with the Vortech pumps. Also this shouldn't be about comparing one to the other, Vortech vs Tunze, each pump should stand on it own. If they both suck there is no reason to get the other one just because it sucks less.

I got a 2nd gen V-Tech, no problems so far. I really like the flow it puts out.
My only complaint is where are the controllers? :screama:
