Petco for me is a very tempting exercise in ethics. If you hit them as they're pulling the fish out of the shipment, you can get some monstrous deals (I got a baby blueline trigger (a $60 fish) for $12 once). But the ethics of their store has kept me out of there for the past several years.

The real unfortunate part is the LFS who tries to sell you a "complete" reef package. When I recently upgraded I did some local research. (anyhting w/in 30 miles) I have walked into many a LFS playing a little dumb to see how reputable they are. You'd be amazed what some people who run nice shops w/ good quality livestock will do when they smell an easy, expensive sale. It's exceptionally hard to find the ones who know that a properly educated customer will most likely return and spend more than the poor fool who just plunked a couple grand down because of catch phrases like "pratically doesn't need to cycle" or " sure you can add coral right away" or my personal favorite..."We'll come and completely install/set-up your system incl. some nice starter fish and corals"

It is fun to suddenly become educated around these shysters and watch them turn colors and stuff.

Unless you know the wrong stuff  Then you look like the fool. I have some customers come in and try to one up me on knowledge and practices while only knowing "half truths". I don't mind people asking questions and in fact I encourage this, but when people turn it into a who knows more game I get bored and annoyed quite easily. I have better things to do then be challenged by joe shmo off the street. I like the people who act curteous and try to either learn something or talk about experiences etc... Then both parties have the opportunity to learn/draw information.

Well now that I think about it I sometimes like to blow people out of the water when theythink they're such a know-it-all. :) It gives me a little smile deep down to know they learned something. Especially when they came in to astonish me with their extensive knowledge of undergravel filtration  .

Dragoon, having not been to your particular store, it sounds like you are one of the good guys, and there was no dig towards you  You have to admit that there are less than reputable individuals and those who sell using old methods, you might be surprised what kinds of set-ups I've seen in some stores. UGF land! Like a warp to 1985. Whether its the guy at Petco or the girl at an LFS, you have to at least pose a probing question or two in order to find out how up to date they are with husbandry methods and how ethical they are. Sure, there will always be the wise guy who's trying to feel smart, but I think the ones who test the waters before choosing, will find their way to the place that has the best to offer to the beginning or experienced customer.

BTW I have a beautiful coral beauty angel I got from Petco for like $12.
