are there pinkish purple forms of algae other than coralline algae. I have a pinkish purple algae growing on my rocks and class, is this coralline algae (sorry i have no pics). the reason I'm asking is my tank has only been set up for 5 weeks and one day, is that enough time for coralline algae to grow after the start-up (Ive introduced coralline algae on the rocks. And I only have an 18w t5 and a 15w NO lighting system. BTW its a 20g high.

Thx.

Hmm. It may be a Cyanobacteria. If its coralline you're doing something right, especially with no lights to speak of. ...just my 2 cents. ;)
All the best,

You did spell Coralline right though, so you did better than most people. :)
The are many Genera of Coralline algae and in each genus there are numerous species. Many unknown or unnamed. There are fuzzy types, types that look like cyano, pinks, purples, reds, etc. and most do better in lower light. Without a picture or a better desciption though, I'd venture to say that it would be Coralline algae.

Well its easy to tell, if you can wipe them of whith ease they are not collarine, if its hard and difficult to remove it most likely is.

wow, thanks for the quick responses. I think its Cyanobacteria cause i just cleaned the diatoms off the glass and the pinkish purple stuff came off with it. :( What should I do about it?

Did this substance come off in slimey sheets ? This would be Cyano.
Cyanobacteria is usually a red-maroon or deep red, green or blue-green not pinkish.
Were these areas small circlets of pinkish algae ? These would be more than likely Coralline and on the glass they may come off easily.
Depending to your answers to the above and with the lighting you have, the length the tanks been up and running plus the seeding you done with other Coralline algae, at the moment I'd still stay Coralline algae.
