people curse Rios for reported failures. i believe the melt downs are actually confined to the larger models though. as in over the 800 model.

i have used them for years with no problems. i actually prefer them for their compact size. for your tank i would use the 800s. they are the same as the 600 model but have a fancier prop.

the won't work well with wavemakers though.

guess I will 3rd the maxi-jets. I would say either 2-400's or 2-600's would be fine for a 29g. Depending on how much flow you wanted and your aquascaping.
They rio's do have a bad reputation however if you can find one that is about 3 yrs or older you should be fine. The newer ones seem to have numerous defects...as I have seen reported.

More of the same. I used Rio's with no problem until I used a wavemaker. Now I have a Maxijet and Minijets. There's even a smaller Microjet that would be great for nanos.

Maxi-jets are good, I havn't had any problems myself with rios, but I hesitate to get more, because people always seem to have problems with rios.

Maxijet!!! My first maxijet from at least 8 years ago finally needs a new impeller. Rio's are worse than crap. I have had the small ones fail and worse, smoke emmissions (twice), electrical shorts and ofcourse failures leading to floods. I did myself a favor and threw evry one I had into the trash and I am in maxijet heaven. Does that answer the question?

I also have several Hagen 802's. They are strong and reliable but the impellers need replacing every couple of years.

Hagens or Maxijets both are great although Maxijets have a better plug (longer and grounded)

Had countless problems with Rios. Maxijets have been perfect for me. I'd get maxijets and not even think about anything else.

In my 29 gallon I have a Maxijet1200 and a Hagen 402. I actually think I could use a little more flow. I tried to replace both with a Mag7, but it was WAY too powerful so now I have a Mag7 sitting in my closet. Oh well.

Why not use the Mag7 in a closed loop with a SCWD (or two) if you think you need more flow?

I'm not quite sure how to set something like that up. Plus, the Mag7 is HUGE! Not much room to put it in the tank.

mags don't need to be submersed.

it is pretty simple piping if you are interested.

WTF?! Really? I'm definitely interested. I'll have to pull that puppy outta the closet.

I had a rio 800 die on me this past summer. The burned plastic smell was really foul and it also released an oily film on the top of my tank. I had to do numerous water changes during the next week, but thankfully, everything survived!!

Go with the maxijets. I have never had one fail.
