I had a pretty bad experience with a wholesale vendor recently This was an order I got for a customer of mine. I'm not going to state the vendor name yet.

1) Placed the order, had verbal confirmation that the items were in stock: the order was: (1) Sallylight foot, (12) Scarlett hermits, (50) Zebra Hermits, (35) Tiger Turbo, (60) Nassarius.

2) I requested fedex shipping, he talked me out of it saying shipping via air cargo was cheaper ($0.68/b vs $1.50/lb). I live close enough to an airport to pickup Delta Dash air cargo.. no problem.

3) Agreed upon date arrives.. no notice of shipping. No tracking number, not even a stated total cost yet. Call them up and I find out some of the critters are no longer in stock the order was held. I can understand this, we agree to try again next week.

4) Next week all items are in stock and it ships. Again no e-mails on shipping information. Call them up again (long distance no 800 number). After waiting a bit I finally get a Delta tracking number. Delta web sites shows it in CA, called the Delta 800 number they show it in Ohio (I think). They give me yet another number to call.. they tell me flight arrived an hour ago and my order was waiting. I can understand the airline mixup.. my boss wasn't thrilled with me leaving at noon to pickup a package for personal use. But hey... i can live with this, but things are getting annoying.

5) Box is in great shape. Go straight to my customers house, looks to be packaged perfectly except the heat packs are cold and the water bags are very cold to the touch.

6) Start the drip acclimation proccess after floating the bags for a few minutes to warm them up. One of the tiger turbo bags are cloudy and the bag stinks!! I located a few dead snails and attempted to save the rest. Other critters look OK so far.

7) After dripping for several hours, I inspected the shells before adding to the customers tank.... I'm amazed at what I find:

Of the 12 Scarletts - 5 empty shells (no animal!)
Of the 50 Zebra's - 26 empty shells
Of the 35 Tiger's - 6 DOA, 1 empty shell.
Of the 60 Nassarius - 9 empty shellss.

Animals die in shipping it happens... but these are empty shells they charged me for!! I look like a complete fool infront of this customer.

8) I call them up pretty pissed. Wait for a call back. I get a callback message of "the packing guy says its impossible that you got empty shells". WTF! I'm lying? I offer to mail him the shells.. he declines. He'll call me back.

9) Next day, no call back. I call them the next day. Have to wait for owner to review he's out today (have to wait till monday now).

10) Guess what still no call back.... call them again. They'll credit me claimed losses for my NEXT order. I don't expect this to be a repeat customer now. I figure this is settled, I can work out something with the customer.

11) Nearly 2 weeks later I have another charge on my credit card.. for $72.69. Now what!! I call up yet again. He tells me that is the shipping for your order. I tell him it can't be. It's $0.68/lb and it was 20 lbs and my invoice already had shipping fee's (box charge, heat packs, and a Minimum Service Fee). At most shipping should be around $13.60. He'll call me back....

12) Wow he actually calls me back. That is my shipping fee. Turns out air cargo has a minium shipping fee of 100 lbs!!! + tax (my order was 20lbs). I say "but you talked me out of Fedex saying it would be twice the price!" Turns out it would have been half the price because they have no such minimum weight fee.

"Sorry" is all I can get out of him.

Should I not feel likely beating something with a bat???

:!:  :!:

Oh man I would be really angry.

Especially about getting talked out of the shippingyou wanted into something more expensive.

Sorry to hear about that! Since they are a wholesale vendor maybe you can go rail against them in the Industry Forum?

Yeah, I don't see anything wrong with stating the name. It's a legitimate review of company product and services.

I would state the name just so that maybe you will get some action on your complaints and as a newbie that is just now doing research before I plop a lot of money down it will be helpful to me. :)

I always try to go Fedex for small 1-2 box orders for the minimum weight issue but also DD is difficult to deal with near me. I've had boxes left over weekend in airport cargo because they close at 9pm Friday nights reopen Monday am.

No, you also make a call to your credit card company (you did pay with a credit card, yes? This is where Amex abso-frickin-lutely SHINES, btw), and you explain the problem, the mistakes they made, and make THEM eat it, the whole thing. You won't be ordering from them again, no need to repeat mistakes. As a matter of fact, you want me to make the call? I am pretty convincing (and the Puerto Rican blood seems to be helpful, too). ;)

Hand them their nuts back on a paper plate, they're not even good enough for a silver platter. Also, this sounds like no wholesaler I've ever dealt with, I wonder how well-established they are. :|

I knew that, SM. I've just seen a couple of retailers on here before that could use the HOT TIP.

Well spoken! I agree!

SM,

For some reason I picture you as this really hot latino woman but at the same time, one of those psycho latino women that like to play with knives

That's apalling behaviour,, call your credit card/debit card company and file a chargeback.

You may not be able to claim on the CC insurance as these items were purchased for resale, and such purchases are usually excluded under the standard insurance coverage provided by most CC companies (not sure about Amex). You could always lie about the resale thing I guess. :)

Good luck

With all the commotion regarding this billboard in the Latin community, I was wondering if this had any effect on you, SM.

Being that it is a wholesaler, the average person here doesn't use them. I'm going to call and ask for the owner on Monday. If that doesn't go well, then I give the name. If it goes well, I'll describe the result and still give the name.

Agreed. I haven't used DD in years. My last experience with it was that the shipment kept getting bumped, mid-summer at the Atlanta HUB... left outside... order got cooked!

Sorta... Visa debt card. Not sure what protection I get using it as a debt card. I'll have to call.

To my knowledge they've been around a while. This is my first livestock order with them. I went with them because they were very reasonable on minimum orders. I didn't need to get hundreds of snails like a typical wholesaler. I just had to pay a "Minimum service fee" since the order was small (AKA "Annoyance fee"). Can you recommend some other wholesalers with low minimum orders? Feel free to PM it if you don't think you should list them here.

Doesn't bother me. I'd rather be thought of as hot than cold any day of the week, no matter what my bloodlines, ya know? ;) Besides, I don't like beer. 420, I don't think I'm psycho, but there have been a couple of guys who had a talent for bringing out "something" in me. My usual M.O. is to build up that head of steam, depending on the situation of course, but I think there's more to be had with the "honey" approach. There are notable exceptions, of course (do something to one of my boys.. ). Then again.. I also have this little impulse control issue... :|

Rich, I could certainly ask a couple of folks, though I wouldn't be surprised if you have the same connections. My "people" are in Germany at the moment, likely hurting themselves with great quantities of beer. I've visited some facilities in the past year, I know who I like just from the ops I've observed, but don't deal actively in import/export anymore.

Sounds like you're gonna post the name whichever way it goes, and I think that is as it should be (although better suited to the Industry forum if we're not talking about a sponsor). However, I also wonder if there should be some note as to the particular individual you dealt with. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the owner makes good. I don't see how crabs of any sort could completely disintegrate in a sealed bag. Snails.. yes, but the crabs?

I have been doing this for years and have never had that bad of an experience with a wholesaler, of course we do $2000 to $3000 orders every few weeks so we have some pull with the wholesalers. It also helps to know your wholesalers personally (go to trade shows and learn who the wholesalers are exactly, and get to know the Reps. Take them out to lunch if you can and they will always treat you right.).
As for Air Freight we always use either Northwest Air or Midwest Air.
FedEx is also a good way to go (ORA uses FedEx).
This is not common practice by wholesalers, so I would suggest spreading the word around. If this is how they do buisness then they don't belong in the Industry.
We are here to support each other, not screw each other over.
Or, shoot me a private email with the name and I can tell you if I have ever done any buisness with them, etc.

If it doesnt work out let us know, we should join together and badmouth them ALL OVER the internet.   - The VISA debit card should carry the same benefits as any credit card when it comes to problems like that.

I used a Visa Debit card and had some trouble getting the charges reversed. It wasn't nearly as easy as a regulavisa, or for that matter Amex who has the power to pull their merchant services from any retailer that takes their cards. That is why AMEX has the most pull when they put the call in to the vender.
