i have 300 watts of vho in a 65 gal . the brain was raised in a tank with the same specs but it seems not to expand to is full potential all the time. some times its huge then on other days not open so much.So im wondering if theres something i can do to keep it happy all the time

IME, open brains do best on the sand bed with sufficient light. They may need target feeding until they are established in your tank.

I *think* Emily's coral is Trachyphyllia geoffroyi. In nature these guys live on the sandbed. Mine has done fine on the sand as well. I provide mine with low/med flow, and high light. Mine seems to do better in a high nutrient environment as well.

For what I know -- low to mod flow, can handle a wide variety of light as long as they are acclimated slowly to high light, avoid sharp rock edges since they are soft (that might add to why they don't expand all the way) -- a lot like the geo in the picture above like sand the best for all of those reasons. Not sure about target feeding -- never had a prob. They will vary in size -- esp. when they expel waste which is quite a sight sometimes..

good easy to keep beginner corals.

Doh! Sorry to assume, Em!

Um, I don't feed mine directly. I feed my tank with DTs and GPs. I'm *guessing* that open brains get a lot of food from nutrient uptake.
