if i wanted to add some mushroom anemones to my tank theyd just something in my tank. if i had some clowns they wouldnt house in them would they? can there be more than one of these in a tank? on the subject of anemones if i wanted a carpet would the two conflict? and lastly if i want to make the carpet a centerpiece of the tank, should i arrange the liverock to accomodate it? say for instance i had the liverock for a whole at the top so that the carpet would have a place to put its foot. any suggestion would help. im making some predictions of what to do to my tank for when i do get a carpet.

no clowns usually dont go inside mushrooms but sometimes they will. you can have different kinds but some will fight each other like other all corals do.
carpet anemones will sting anything it touches and they are not hardy so i dont recommend them. most carpets like the bottom sand, not the rocks.

Mushroom anemones are scientificaly known as corallimorphs, and aren't 'true' anemones. You can have many, many of them in a tank, as tthey are easier to keep and reproduce quickly. Because they are not true anemones, they do not host clownfish. A carpet would go with them. Im sure somone has told you this already, but carpets are risky as far as "Where did my fish go?!?". I believe that carpets prefer sand, so you could arrange the rock so that there is a patch of sand of sand in the middle, however, it may depend on species/lighting. Carpets also get big, so make sure you have enough room. One more thing-there's no guarantee that the carpet will stay where you put it, and there's not much you can do about where it goes. HTH! 
I think your tank size is fine. As for lighting, on that sized tank, metal halides would be the best. i guess you COULD get away with lots of PC's, but id go with the MH.
Im a bit confused about your last question, but if you want to get lights, then upgrade them, i suggest you buy the right kind the first time. It saves LOTS of money. HTH

HTHFor a 24 inch deep tank with an anemone on the sand and SPS in the future I wouldn't use 175w. Two 250w would be fine (nobody will fault you for two 400w either).
I wouldn't add mushroom however. Although they won't kill the carpet they may deform it when they touch. I had that problem. The contact clearly bothered the anemone. Left unchecked the anenome would move away.
And forget about mixing mushrooms and SPS corals.

I'd go for 3 halides over a 72" tank,,, if you can handle the heat and electricity bill then go for the 400w SE or 250w DE,,, if you get 175's you'll probably regret it later,, just like I did.
I have a pair of pink skunk clowns that are hosting in some large rhodactis mushrooms. I don' think it happens very often though, and they'd probably prefer a carpet anemone anyday.
Mushrooms can be a major pain to get rid of once they get a foot hold in your tank,,,, I had to rip out 30lbs of rock to get rid of the Rhodactis from one tank. Some of the less aggressive SPS' like Montipora sp. will lose hands-down in a chemical fight with a mushroom.
As others have said, if you get a carpet anemone, be careful where you place it,, they can get huge,, mine grew from about 4 inches to 14+ inches in less than a year and it could still grown another foot in diameter easily.
I don't know if this is a new tank or not but if possible, add your carpet first and let it get settled *before* you add your SPS,,,,, if your carpet goes for a walk it will severely damage every coral it touches. If it is a new tank,, I wouldn't try a carpet for at least 3 months after the initial cycle.

yes, this will be my first tank. so do you think that i should add my to clowns first since that was what i was going to do initially after the cycle. next i had planned on putting in some mushrooms but i guess that's out if i plan on having a carpet. so should i just put in a couple of fish and wait six months for the tank to mature and then add the carpet? that' how long ive been told to wait by my lfs. ummmmmm with the two clowns the carpet should acclimate a little better and ill introduce my first corals not long afterwards. do you have any suggestions for some hardy ones? and please no damsels. thanks.
