A hang-on power filter will be much easier, or, if you don't want something that you leave running all the time, Magnums are great (a 330 with the diatom filter does an excellent job of polishing the water).

Do you have a refugium/sump set-up? In the long run, you'll eventually want one of these for more biological filtration (i.e. algae for nutrient export). A simple filter sock would be all you need for excess debris. :wink:

Xenia ! lol sorry couldn't resist
I don't get it. :?

I dont have any type of filtration other than LR and a skimmer. I dont get any kinda detrius build up for that matter either. I still blast my rocks once a week or so and watch my skimmer go crazy.

I have a Magnum Canister filter, its extremely easy to clean as long as you get the quick disconnects with it. I only use mine about once every couple of months to clean out my sump when I do a water change

I also have a Magnum 330 hang on filter. It is also very user friendly

What size of tank do you have?

Unless you have a large tank the Penguin should work fine.

Magnum is a model made by Marineland. I've used them in a few applications and I find them equally messy with the Fluval.

We just got a Lifegard service cart... :::: insert Tim Allen Grunt here::::: It polished the water in the 1000 in about an hour...

:::More Power!!:::::

If it's yellow, you need carbon filtration. If it's got particulate matter, then you'll need something to polish the water. The Mag with the quick disconnects is pretty damn cool for either application, the diatom is a cartridge that drops in. I used to use the diatom when I had the setup/maintenance business.

Xenia are good filter feeders and tend to grow like weeds once established.

Xenia do not posess the ability to either capture or digest food, FYI. They do grow like weeds though, and absorb much the nutrient needed for growth directly from the water, but they won't remove any particulate matter.
