I have a Rena Cal Excel heater to start with. It has a bunch of white hard stuff on it. (it is really thin) I can't seem to get it off with a brush and the razor scraps off the black rubber stuff on there. I am wondering what purpose the rubber serves and how i should go about getting the white stuff off with out damaging the heater. Oh yeah it is dried on, the heater has not been in a tank for a little while. Thanks for any help

I wouldn't worry about cleaning the rubber caps off, but it's a good idea not to let buildups accumulate on the element.

Try white distilled vinegar if it bothers you though ;)

I personally believe its the heater. I have used all types of heaters at the store and for some reason the renas seem to accumulate a thick calcium layer like no other.
