OK here is the problem, I am about to switch a 29G tank over to a 60G tank. Yesterday I had picked up a Mandarin and put it in the tank and all was fine.
Well last night the power went out for about 4 hours, I had an air pump in the water the whole time. When I had left for work (4AM) the power was still out but came back on at 8ish. When I got in from work and looked in the 29G my 2 tomato clowns have white stuff all over them and the males eyes are both cloudy. Now it does not look like ich more like a fungus. Every other fish in the tank looks fine, not a spec on them! What should I do before I make the transfer over to the new tank? Just add the rock and Quarenteen all the fish but the mandarin? Just Q the clowns? Dip the fish in something before adding them?

I need to start the move and get it done by tonight

thanks for any help

sorry to hear it.

did you quarantine the mandarin before putting it in your tank with the clowns? it seems odd that a power outtage would result in the clowns displaying a parasitic infection so quickly... i wonder if the mandarin brought-in velvet or some other nasty?

no I did not QT the manderin because I thought it would starve and I have had luck with all other fish from the store I picked it up from in the past, so maybe I caused the deaths :(
All the other fish are in the new tank along with the corals and everything else is looking great! I did not use the tank water from the 29G but did a couple of waterchanges in my 75G (running since Oct) and used that water along with new water I made, Live sand from a 12G I broke down a few days ago along with new sand and all the rock from the 29G must be like 60 or 70 lbs plus I am adding 10-20 lbs from my 75

Brooklynella can kill clowns that quickly and from the symptoms you described, that could have been it.

Mandarins seldom get parasites because they have a unique slime coat that makes them rather resistant to them.

While it's not impossible that the Mandarin carried something, in my opinion it's highly unlikely. Could be the stress of the power outage brought on an outbreak of the Brooklynella.

What was your tank temp before/during/after the power failure?

well I just found another fish dead, a perc clown :( so maybe it was brooklynella

I did not get to monitor the temp (at work) but the temp was around 79 at the time the power went out

thanks

For future reference, it's not a good idea to mix clown species in the same tank, particularly such a small tank (even 65 g is small, IMO).

If the temperature spiked above that, that could have been the stressor, combined with lower dissolved oxygen, which could have caused a pH drop...

I'd put money on Brooklynella.

Sorry for your losses.

I know not to mix but I had to throw that fish in there until I found a home when I broke the 12G down

thanks

Ah.. understood...

How long did you have all of those clowns? I hate a mystery... wondering how/when the Brook (assuming that is what it was) could have been introduced.

Also, any other fish like Gramma loreto? They carry it at this time of year too...

Jenn, it sure sounds like Brooklynellosis to me.

I, on the other hand, am getting ready for the furunculosis again with our goldies and the one koi that survived last year.
