I'm trying to guage the interest in pda aquarium maintenance software. Seems there isn't anything great out there and I am thinking about developing something better. Would people be interested? If so what devices do you have? Palm, ipaq's etc...

It would be easier for data entry than a PC and probably easier than a laptop since its more mobile and you could sit by your tank with it. I know I would be more likely to use it that way. It would still be nice to be able to link it to a program on your PC where you can keep more data and do more charting and stuff...

There is (was) a shareware program for the Palm called "aquapilot" for logging tank stuff.

I have a Palm device.

I will probably buy Palm "Documents to Go" (basically MS-Office for the Palm).

i've been thinking about writing one for pocketpc's. i currently write software for them for collecting and processing forest management data, so i figure it'll be pretty easy to crank out. if you're thinking about doing this opensource, i'll chip in some lines...

iPAQ would be good :). The export (and import) idea is great, that's what I'm currently missing from
Reefcon (check it out for the design, I think that it's great).

I don't see the point for such software.

There are many things you can measure but very few that need to be measured. A one second glance at my tank is enough for me to know whether there is a problem or not. You can even measure alkalinity like that. For example, if there isn't coraline growing (annoyingly obviously) on the glass a few days after the last clean then alkalinity is low.

Even if the software is needed, does it need to run on a PDA? Most people presumably have their home computer prety close to their reef tank.

My guess is that sales would be so low that you'd be lucky to get a "free" meal a year out of it. Granted the World is big, but I doubt it's big eough.

I think it could be very useful, it would be nice if the proggy can calculate burn rates of Calcium, ALk and the like. You input your data and then the software could easily spit out an avg. consumption. Maybe even trigger an alert when something deviates from the avg. to far.

Just my 2 cents, what do I know. I'm a WannaBe :)

Fair enough, but there is an awful lot of pointless "stuff" out there. There's also a bunch of games for PDA's that seem to sell well, that's one that even I don't understand. Those of us with PDA's are generally misunderstood by those who choose not to use one....

I do see the point of such software especially for new setups. Most of the existing stuff I've seen is not great. I support the idea of new software as long is it covers all the water quality parameters, spaces to log new additions, notes etc. When my tanks were new I logged all these by hand and its kinda neat to look back through my logbook from time to time. It would have been better if this stuff was computerized. Not forgetting it should be very user friendly for knuckleheads like me.
