Snorkel in my tank

So I was talking to a guy at Capitol Aquarium in sacramento and he said they gravel vac their reef tank often. I have been suffering from a substantial build up of organic stuff in my sands and on live rocks, so I am considering this. I have heard people say not to do it in a reef, and now I have a guy telling me I definitely should. Do you guys gravel vac? Do you consider it necessary, optional, a bad thing to do? Why?

Most people generally have enough critters and sand sifters that they dont have to worry about gravel vacumming. ie, worms, stars, snails, hermits, inverts, etc...

In your situation with the extra organic build-up I don't see a problem with you vacumming out your sand bed along with your water changes. Great way to get it up out of there.

Welcome to reefs.org and how long has your tank been running? Tank parameters etc..?

I vac when I do my occasional water changes. Nothing too detailed, but I do pull out a suprising amount of "stuff".
