I didnt mean it my prior post ot be offensive at all. I mearly meant to say come up with your own ideas and do your own thing. Just asking a gang of questions over and over are just going to make people irratated. Many of us still make newbie mistakes and still are learning along the way.

Its cool to help people but when they want you to do the whole thing for them it gets a bit bothersome

go as big as you can afford, someone once told me you be prepared to spend $500 for every 10 gallons of tank, if your doing a reef setup. It actually is pretty accurate, atleast for me and my 90 gallon.

that about only covers the first year of a reef tanks operation

come up with my own ideas..shoot im all about hacking off others..that requires me to think...I honestly dont think ive come up with my own ideas..i thought this place here(Reefs.Org) was to swap ideas and get answers to questions...I understand it is frustrating at times when tons of questions get asked but what is worse? having him go out with no knowledge kill a bunch of organsims (which we all here want to protect right?) frustrate himself, get outta the hobby and curse this industry? Ive been to LFS's that pull that crap..take no offense to this supaboy, i can understand your frustration..you are right most of us still make NewB mistakes, i know i do...But i would do what Len said JustReefIt, post more Threads, not run on questions on one thread...But dont stop asking questions..thats when you start making mistakes.. :D

Never said stop asking questions.
I said come up with ones that pertain to what you are going through. I am not the only one who said to go read a book I am just the only one to say it the way I said it.

This is a great place to get ideas and swap em around but if you expect everyone to do all the research for you, you're bound to fustrate a few people.

Which clams r best? which ones r good for the newbie and can ne one describe the difference in types?

i also want a clam, which ones r best? what kind of lighting? what kind of food? and more

I love to ask for advice and give advice when I can but I dont expect anyone to do my research and work for me. Take no offense JUSTREEFIT14 I am super happy you are on a knowledge quest to make you future pets happy but maybe narrow down your questions a bit and then combine it with research you have done to come out with a good conclusion.

RIght now I understand you dont even have a tank lets start there what kinda of budget are you looking at??

How big of a space do you have for this tank??

Do you have 2 jobs to support your addiction??

NIkon I didnt take any offense btw and the great thing I find with reefkeeping is how original any one can be. The possibilities are endless to what you can do with your OWN tank. Yes the methods are eithere the same or pretty close you can still come out with a totally different outcome depending on who put the tank together. Ita a super fun addictive hobby but its one of the most rewarding when you looko at it and go "thats mine, I made it not anyone else"

ne is either short for 'northeast' (and still improperly written), or a bad way to spell the 'knights of nih''s most powerful weapon  :P

Not trying to be negative here, but I think many of the very helpful people here stop reading a post the second they have to try and translate the message. I've asked many beginner questions here and gotten many good responses, while I've seen other posts get ignored since no1 want to xlate ne1 elses slanguage (I think slanguage is actually a word in the new websters dictionary :? ) I think if you'd take the time to type out easier to understand questions, you'd really get a much better response.

I think its great that your getting all this info ahead of time. I wish I had for my first tank 4 years ago. That would have saved several poor fishes lives.

Also my 2 cents about saving money is to listen to the good advice here and spend the money on the pieces that people recommend. $200 for a skimmer is cheaper than $50 for a cheap skimmer plus $200 for the right one when you realize the cheap one is, well useless. I'm an avid DIY'er but even still I think my start up cost for my recent 55 gallon FOWLR is a bit over $600. For that I already had the tank, stand, sump, and some equipment.

thats what im thinking about doing, buying my tank piece by piece. from the begining my tank will be fish only with live rock and live sand. ill cycle it with live rock and live sand. then ill add a pair of clowns and eventually start my reef with button polyps or mushrooms not sure which speices. any suggestions? i want my reef to be perfection. does anyone know anything about tanks inside the wall? well does this sound so far so good? and can i get any suggestion on quality brand products? skimmers, filters, lighting, i really dont understand the object of the sump and ect. thanks in advance!

skimmers, filters, lighting, i really dont understand the object of the sump and ect.

Aqua C is what I use and what most people will recommend. Jason at Aqua C is a super help to anyone who needs it . Also if you give him a call he might have a slightly bruised model laying around he might sell to you for cheap. Remora is the Hang on and the Urchin is the in Sump those are the two base models people usually go for. His Website is www.proteinskimmer.com

Most people dont have a "Filter" as you would think. If you are going to start with a FOWLR you should be fine with just the live rock and live san maybe a filter sock somewhere in there to catch particulate matter but you will need to take that out and clean it every few days to prevent a nitrate build up.

Lighting is pretty easy but can be very expensive. You said you want to keep clams and other corals where photosynthesis is their main source of food. I would go for the metal hilides with actnic pcs combo this will save on money and give your tank a nice blue look, Their wattage and how many will depend on how big a tank you get. Look into DIY to save a bunch of mola seeing as you dont have a job and only have so much to put towards your tank.

The object of a sump is to increase the size of bioload your tank can handle and hide all the unsightly plumbing. There is where you usually put your skimmer and all the things you dont really wanna see when you are staring at your tank (I still do it atleast 30 mins a day) I wouldnt recomend an in wall tank if you are living in an apt or are not a construction worker.

thanks that info was great, ill really take it to use. would it be ok or bad to introduce my two clowns and or button polyps or mushrooms at the same time, so that itll be a reef from the start in stead of a fowlr tank?
