several weeks ago part of my leather closed up, the area has enlarged very slightly over 4wks or so, do i still sit or cut out the area? i find it hard to believe it is normal at this point?
To me it looks cut or maybe had a predator eat parts of it. I would look for predator at night time. If its been like that for 4 weeks those spots shouldnt be getting bigger but should have some polyps growing out of them by now.
The tissue appears healthy (not necrotic). I would leave it alone and see what happens. If the tissue turns "blackish" and begins to dissolve, then I would just cut the whole crown off the top and let it grow a new one. I wouldn't do anything though until the tissue starts showing signs of being necrotic.
These corals are some of the hardiest out there. They are also VERY finicky. I bet a lot of them are destroyed prematurely because the owner mistakes them for dead or dyeing. Just be patient with it and leave it alone.
I'm not sure if this is generally advisable, but it's worked for me in the past so I state it as an option. Gently wave your hand above the leather until its polyps retract. Then take a soft brush and very gently brush off the bald spots.
...and set your alarm clock for 3am to go look at the coral with a flashlight. Look very closely for nudibranchs or other creatures that might be eating the coral. These parasites may look very much like the coral itself in coloration or texture.
