Refractometers

Is a refractometer a refractometer? I have seen them being sold at wine supply shops for under $40. Can I use the same refractometer for measuring both salinity and brix?

For some reason I thought that brewing refractometers test a different range than saltwater ones, seems I remember someone bought one at a yardsale and was dissapointed he couldn't use it on his tank.


But, if you pick one up and it measures in the right range, why not? Maybe they don't correct for temperature like the reef ones supposedly do?

Just different scale and different range. If you don't have one with the right scale, it can be a PITA to remember that you need to keep the water at 192_bier instead of regular salinity unit
