so are you saying that i could run just a mh system. 3x400w bulbs would be alot of light. i think id still rather have some actinics just for night viewing. does it sound like a plan?

Don't get actinics for night viewing. Get moonlights. They kick butt.

the site says that the ballasts for the mh's will neeed to be wired by a qualified electrician. how should i make this happen. and what about the lunar lights?

3x400 watters would be a lot of money too.

I believe hellolights has moonlights, coralife makes great ones. :D

Those moonlights are LED right? I believe they show shimmer reflections on the sandbed & promote coral spawning. Do Metal Halidies do the Same for shimmer reflections?

One feature of MH is that they givea shimmer effect on the water like the sun because they are a point-light source, not a tube with light coming out all over it.

the three mh system will it work? well i wanna say will it be enough for some of the really hard corals to keep that need alot of light, because if i need more i will be saving for a loooooong time. im trying to get a job this summer to start a little savings for the start up but its going to be split in half for back to school things. :P. sps,a carpet, and the other things of that nature. again the glow lights sound like a good idea but how will i get them onto the hood and to fit in the canapy? i should make a post in the diy forum. as always thanks in advance

the three radium bulbs may be a bit blue, saw a post where someone was usin 4x400 watt 20k radium bulbs. i took a close look and decided to go for something with the same wattage but brighter, so someone told me to go for the 400 watt 20k xm bulbs. a crispy white/and a lighter blue. hellolights sells them and i thought about 2x400 watt xm bulbs and maybe some vho actinics. questionable setup or go for a little more. as always thanks and any advice appreciated. :D

omg what about combining some 400 watt 20k radiums with some vho actinic whites.

I dont think that would be neccessary, I dont believe you would see a difference. The MH's would still appear blue. If you have the 20k radiums, just stick with those. 8)

thank god, i thought my post was like some sort of death trap and thats why no one wanted to reply to it.lol  so you say just stick with the radiums, but why? as ive said i dont the tank to be too blue if get what im saying. lets say i combine the radiums with some vho's with a lower kelvin rating. could this make the blue lighter. i wish i could see some pics of some tanks running on radiums. i may just make a post in the photo gallery. your help has been great and i hope to hear more. :D

it seems like saving money in this hobby is always a good thing, so i tried to see how i could lower the cost of a mh lighting system. i went to hellolights before and put together a 3x400 watt 10k xm system and it came to 751.90. wow. so i went back again and put together the same setup without the lights and the setup came to 358.00. so good i saved money but i still need bulbs, the 400 watt xm bulbs are 69.00 so three of those would be 207.00. it doesnt look but a little over 500, hey 200 and some more saved. lol. im going to get some moon lights which are 15.00 the 3/4 moon lights from coral life, five of them. totaling this up came to 640.00. now does that sound good or what? oh yeah with the setup ill get 2 three inch fans. will this be enough or should i just omit the fan idea and get a chiller or bigger fans. and lastly the bulbs were on sell does anyone have any idea how long these online ideas last?

I know where your coming from as far as money, and a chiller would rock your budget to mars. Hellolights sales usually last a while. Keep the fans and try supporting the system a couple incehes above the tank surface to flush out some heat.
