Power-guzzling Calif. family hit with drug warrant

CARLSBAD, Calif. (AP) - When police noticed Dina Dagy's family was spending $250 to $300 a month on electricity, they suspected a marijuana farm was flourishing under high-intensity lights inside their suburban home.
What they found when they showed up with a drug-sniffing dog and a search warrant was a wife and mother who does several loads of laundry a day, keeps a dishwashing machine going, has three electricity-guzzling computers and three kids who can't remember to turn the lights out when they leave a room.

"It's hard to believe a high utility bill would be enough to issue a state warrant," said Dagy, who is demanding the Police Department issue a written apology.

When I was in college, somebody broke into the university greenhouses and stole a bunch of lighting. It didn't even occur to me to think 'pot growers' because all the lighting was metal halide pendants. :lol: It wasn't until the end of the news story and they said that the police thought they were going to be used for marijuana growing.

I always wondered the same thing about our reef tank lighting. We are equal to or greater than the amount of electricity that home growers use. Probably some of the exact same light setups as well.

Just to be on the safe side I got my apartment manager into reefing so if the local PD gets nosy he can tell them what I'm doing. 8)

People grow in dorm closets here.

I have an assembled MH retrofit kit sitting unused in my dorm. I get either funny looks or exclamations of excitement from everyone who sees it. :lol:

My house has been inspected by the local police department due to the high electrical usage. They made no mention of marajuina, but it was pretty evident.

Since this is loosely relevant to reefkeeping, I'll keep it here ... for now

len. i know you live in the los angeles area. what city? im in manhattan beach, im wondering how nazi the cops are around here about this sorta thing. we've had helicopters scanning the neighborhood before.

I also had a little visit. The blue lights glowing in the garage and through the wall, the "hurry up and close the garage door so the heat doesn't scape in winter", and the anti-social redneck cop that lives next to me may be some of the reasons.

One could point out about rights being violated, just because your electric bill is high doesn't automatically make you a criminal.

It's arguable that they had probable cause. I harbor no resentment towards law enforcement for doing what they did.

I HAVE put plants beside my tank to "catch" the MH overflow... but never considered pot... I was just starting Hot peppers for my garden!!!!

damn we're called "reefers" and most are too fish geeky to think of growing POT... Who would maintain the Reef if you were ARRESETED?!?!?

Okay, now we're approaching Sump territory The Nazis were mass murdering genocidal racists. IMO, it's an unreasonable stretch to equate law enforcement with Nazis.

My point is they should have more evidence than a high electric bill to do a search for marijuana. I'd think there would be suspicious activity that they would be able to look for before going in based on an electric bill alone.

Did they provide a warrant? Did they "ask" to come in? What did they say when they confronted you? How did they confront you?

Very curious, I used to be a local police officer for over 2 years untill I resigned.
