This month's aquarium is my all time favorite. A man after my own heart.

Does anyone know what a decanter is? I couldn't find Reference 1: Tout savoir sur la sédimentation Joffrey Dislaire Aquarium Récifal - 2001. Not that I understand French, but I figured I could decipher any schematics.

A decanter is used to remove sediment from the water. This is an excellent concept....detritus often covers the bottom of my sump.

I would love to see Mr. Dislaire's article.

regards,

Hi,

The role of the decanter is to slow down water flow to a near complete stop. That way small particles will have the time to settle at the bottom of the decanter. They are then easy to export out of the system.

In order to have a useful decanter, you must compute its size, especially the length, based on the initial flow speed from the overflow and the smallest sediments particle size that you want to stop. This is all based on fluid dynamics and other evolved things that I do not understand myself. This is were Joffrey Dislaire comes; he loves that kind of stuff.

Contact me off-bb if you want Joffrey's direct contact, so that you can ask him.

The reference is a French paper magazine that is not published anymore.
The article itself is available online, for a small fee (approx. 2.10 USD, for the article's author, not the web site, trust that, I know the owner), but still in French, here:

There are two basic schools of engineering. The empirical school, and the analytical school. Nico idea belongs to the analytical school, while the empirical school people will tell you that your sump *IS* a decanter.

I belong to no school. I'm just an information relay there.

Sure, a sump is a basic decanter.

Sure, Joffrey is from the analytical school.
