I'm setting up a new system and want to use garden hose to bring water from the wall to my RO/DI system. I remember hearing somewhere that garden hose is not fish safe. If this is true I would assume it's because they use an anti-fungal agent in the tubing. Anyone know if this is true? Or is there a safe type of garden hose. I could always used flexible PVC tubing and cement fittings on each end, but hey....lazyness always wins.

Thanks.

Get NSF-certified hose for potable water, or use PVC.

Cheap garden hose smells...

When I was in that situation, I did what was suggested already and got 1/4" RO tubing and an adaptor that attached to the faucet and ran that to my RO.

But, am I right in thinking that if it is going TO the RO unit, the garden hose would be OK? After all, it then goes through a RO unit that I would think would remove anything harmful.

After all, my house water runs through copper pipe before it gets to my RO unit, but what come out is not copper contaminated.

I do know that it is not ok for in-tank or in-sump use. You don't want your tank water circulationg for a long period of time through it. I had a piece of garden hose on the return in a 75 gallon RR. The brass broke down from the inside out. In short order, the fish looked like crap. It took me a long time to come up with an answer. Finally, it dawned on me that the hose had never been replaced as originally intended. When I unscrewed it, it was nothing more than a shell as the metal had dissolved. I wouldn't trust it for any more than water changes. JMO

Yes, all the organic will be easily filtered out by the RO, but for high pressure application, garden hose is not a good idea unless you remember to turn off the tap, and let the water out of the hose. Over time, the hose will burst open. It is only intended to be pressurized for a few hours at a time.

I use garden hose for water changes. I have about 20 feet worth that has the adapters cut off the ends. My RIO 2500 goes into my tank and the hose naturally mates right on the output. About 15 seconds later 10-15 gal of water have been removed from my tank. It works well just as long as the hose doesn't slip off because a RIO 2500 WILL shoot water completely across the room.

I have use the garden hose for refill but don't really trust it even though it doesn't smell....
