How much do you use & how often do you change it? Also do you use carbon passively (just put a bag in the sump) or actively (run in through a canister filter)?
yup, i also use enough to fill a 4 x 8 bag. i simply drop the bag in the area of the sump where the overflow dumps into as well as the skimmer. i change it out every two weeks ( i run carbon 24/7).
I use about 1 cup for ~90gal and put it in a micron bag in a hang-on power filter that is left over from my freshwater days. Works well and is simple to clean.
I use about a cup and a half whenever I think my water looks a little yellow when I view my tank through from the side.
I actually use a large fish net, I put the rinsed carbon in the net and set the net on the rim of the tank that houses my skimmer, so the carbon hangs in the water.
Laura,.... omg you are a daredevil. If that net falls in then you are going to have a real mess.
I use to use carbon in a micron bag tied around my overflow hose. It caused a lot of problems. The force of the water was too much and the carbon broke down soo much that it got out.. some through the mesh and other through the top since it wasn't tied on tight enough. Needless to say... Carbon everywhere. What a nightmare to clean up.
They way I do it the net CAN'T fall in, it is one of those very large nets and the frame is bigger than the tank it is hanging on!
I have however, accidently spilled carbon in a tank before though (picked up a mess bag that was not properly closed by the bottom) and yes, it is a big mess!
