Opinions please.

I currently have a 37 gal (30x12) reef tank and plan to upgrade. A new tank will go in the same spot. I have about 42 inches of wall space. SHould I go with a 58g or have a custom 42x18 or 42x20ish tank built??

I will build my own stand and canopy so that shouldn't be an issue and plan to use 2 halides on the tank.

Thoughts??

Thanks!

What are the dimensions of the 58? And what about the third dimension on the custom?

A 58g is 36wide 18deep and 21 high. My alternative would be a custom 42wide 18or 20 deep and 21 high.

58 would probably be cheaper.

All-Glass makes a 65 that is 36x18x23 (I think the 23 is right). The 65 has a center brace though where the 58 does not.

I would go with the custom - ya know as big as you can get in the space you have if you can afford it. Also, I like a deeper tank.

I was faced with the same dilemma when my 58g sprung a leak. I was initially going to replace the tank with another 58, but after I spoke with my LFS, I decided to have a custom acrylic tank built to fill the 44 inches I had to use. I am now much happier with what amounts to a 69gallon tank.
