I am looking for quiet and efficient cooling fans for my hood. I have been using Radio Shack fans. Them seem to make a buzzing & whirling noise. Any Ideas?
IMO, anything that is "specifically made for aquarium use" means overpriced... Just get a muffin fan like Mikef said, and hook it up to a computer powersupply.
My vote for Ice Cap they are quite and push alot of air that speeds up when needed and slows down when not needed by a thermostate. I've used computer fans and they make more noise and are one speed. If you don't need a lot of air movement then you can go with a low CFM computer fan they don't make much noise.
The muffin fans I got are actually 110v so I dont need a power supply I just plug them right in the wall. they are sweet and like tangir1 said they are cheap so why waste money on something you dont need when you can use that extra money on something you do need. My muffin fans have been running for 2 years with no problems.
I bought computer fans from www.newegg.com when I was placing another order for computer parts. The spec's the list list the airflow, and the dB(sound) rating. that helped alot.
The fans in most personal computer power supplies are high quality DC fans. I run two of them AND to keep them quiet I power them with a cheap AC/DC adapter that is adjustable - you can get them from radioshack. The AC adapter is a normal plug in charger but has a slide switch to change the voltage from 1v to 12 v in steps. I just slide the voltage down until the fans slow down enough to be quiet. Works great! Much cheaper than Icecap fans.
