Something Strange in tank...

Hello all, I just recently bought a few more pieces of live rock to put in my tank, about 50lb now. Anyway, I have noticed what looks like cobwebs on the rock as of lately. This was not present when I first put the rock in the tank. And has seemed to gather more and more of this web looking stuff. I was curious as to what it may be. All of my water parameters are correct.

There is a bit of green algae on the new live rock, which I bought purposefully for my tang, as well as the shape of the rock.

I have searched and not found anything that this could be. Any help would be great. I will try to get a picture later but I am not sure it will turn out.

Hi Wayne and welcome to Reefs.Org!

I'm not sure what this stuff is but I've had it on live rock in some of my tanks too. It's always just vanished on its own eventually. I wouldn't worry about it.

I'll move this to the GRD forum where you'll probably get some more experienced feedback.

Do the webs seem to disappear, then reappear?

You may have some vermetid snails that are attached to your new live rock. They are perfectly harmless. As immobile suspension feeders, they release sticky threads (or webs) to capture food and reel them in. You may be able to see their little heads sticking out of their spiral tubes on the rock.

Yes, they do dissapear and reapear. I did a little research last night and i think they may be spaghetti worms. Or like you said some other type of filter feeding animal. Thanks for the responces.

Spaghetti worms and peanut worms are very common in LR. They keep those little holes clean as well as the LR surface.
