If it's breaking it's under stress and so doing soemthing. So not having it's probably not a good idea. There should bee a way to fix it that's worth not having to worry about 70 gallons or more of water on the floor.
What are the dimensions on that?
I'd try asking in DIY for advice on how to fix it.
It's 47 inches long by 26 inches high, and 13 inches deep. Im taking out as much water as i can now. Maybe i can by a new black brace. I don't know, don't know what to do right now ..
I know one of the "reef experts" that did this a while back because he put his MHs a little too close to his plastic brace. He had two giant C clamps on his tank for a few years after that. They looked ugly, but they will work until you can either buy a new tank or figure something else out.
I have heard of a type of glue that will instantly seal and cure even with water present and is supposedly completely safe. I have a friend that breeds poisen dart frogs and swears that this stuff is a maracle. Has used it on thousands of frog tanks with no ill effects. i will see if i can get more info this weekend for you on what the product is....
Thanks guys.. Im heading up to the fish store now to see what i can do. Since i took some water out, the crack almost went back into place. So there is a problem.....
Glass bends.
All tanks with water in them have stress, right?
Tank manufacturers may undersize the glass thickness because there's going to be a brace there to help out, but I wonder if the black bracing on top is there just as much to maintanin a square top that a light fixture or glass cover could properly fit into.
I'd still fix/replace the brace though, or buy a custom tank with corner bracing if you don't like bracing across it's width.
Well i picked up a new black frame for the top. It was a real pain in the @ss to get the old one off. Glued all the way around. Took the water level down to as far as i could go. Then i took the brace off. The guy at the fish store told me that the MH that i have above the tank made the bar weak from the heat. Thats possible i guess. None the less, the tank is fine and fixed. Thanks for all your help guys.
I had to do that to my 55 gal a few years back when it was a fw tank.It is a pain, but worth the peace of mind to have fixed, and cheaper than a new tank.
If you know the tank mfg, you should be able to call them up and request a new brace for your tank. You'd have to partially drain your tank, pull the old brace off, and install the new one but that would rectify the problem.
Ya i tried to get a hold of the maker. It was Great Lakes Aquariums. Could not find them on the web. Didn't have there number. Like i said just glad to have it fixed........
