recently scientists came up with a new technique to remove the plaque material that accumulates in the brains of alzheimer's patients. they did this by making a magnetic chemical that binds to the plaque material with a mechanical filter you would have in a vein that had a magnet in it and would pull aside the chemical with the material bound to it as it passed through that part of your body. i wish i could find the article and reference it here because it was fascinating and had a really high success rate. the people undergoing the therapy actually substantially improved.

what i'm wondering is, could a technique similar to this be used to remove selective metabolites from aquarium water to prevent RTN from spreading or used to improve the health by eliminating the chemical warfare the corals play on each other?

and how difficult would it be to create magnetic substances that could bind to the metabolites that we would want to remove? as long as you're not dosing iron i guess you wouldnt have much of a problem using a filtration like this.

Trust me, you don't want to know... - Supposedly uses magnets to purify tank water, and give inner peace, harmony and utter tranquility for your fish.

I was just being my usual sarcastic self.. :D - What you were originally posting sounds pretty interesting - please share the link if you find it again.

Either some lucky biochemist stumble upon the right compound and realize the potential, or some dumb biochemist who decided to work on this project instead of more profitable drug for the elderly.

I've been getting the new mag Coral which is *great* so far....the only negative I've got is that in both issues they ran a full page ad for the EcoAqualizer.....

I'm wondering if anyone has ever contacted the Houston Zoo to speak w/the 'emeritus' that states it's the best thing since buttered toast....

Eh, I'm not going to fault them for that. Magazines take a considerable amount of $$ to create and maintain. That ad helped bring that magazine to you in print form. The only downside is that newbies don't know what works and what doesn't, which is why these message boards exist for reefkeepers to discuss products, salt, test kits, etc... :)

I've seen decent articles in Tropical Fish Hobbyist and Aquarium Fish Monthly. Coral Magazine is definitely good and worth the subscription cost. You should be able to just google the above names and find their URL's. Heh, I'm still partial to Advanced Aquarist though... ( http://www.advancedaquarist.com/ ) :P

I too would love to see a link. It is so so hard to make a mini-magnet of any power. I used to be a physicist...the magnets I used then were as big as my house. More expensive and much much colder...

The problem is that, unlike electrical charge, there is no such thing as a magnetic charge. Everything is neutral. The best you can do is have more "north pole" at one end and "more south pole" down the other, and that limits the force you can exert - every time you pull one end you get some push from the other !

It's really weird stuff....and that, of course, is why the EcoA guys gather around this area.
