This kinda debate is like two forensic scientists during a murder trial..one for the prosecution and the other for the defence, its all a matter of who you are gonna believe...There are just too many factors involved..if you have too many fish, if you dont, if you underfeed, or not...3inches, 5inches...Im thinking a whole lot more research is needed before anything conclusive can be said..JMO..I have a 3in sand bed...i havent seen any real signs of it needing "recharging" but then again its only a year and a half old...

So it sounds like deep sand beds are a thing of the past. I do a lot of reading online but the trouble is you never really know when stuff was written. In a hobby like ours everything changes by the minute. Remember when bristle worms were bad and we all used wet/dry filters? Everyone seemed to love DSBs in the threads from 2002 but since then I guess opinions have changed. I will most likely do a 2" fine sand in the main tank and the same in a dark remote sump and the same in reverse cycle refugium. I'll expect to reduce NO3 without too much PO4 problems. Then I'll change about half the sand every year or so.

I think it is more like a reality check than DSB's being a thing of the past.

Well said. Like people are realizing they're not all they're cracked up to be but taking them for what their worth.
