It's official even though discovered years ago taxonomists have now classified Schindleria brevipinguis as the smallest fish. This little marine fish tops out at about 8.4mm (.33") in length.
You don't have to worry about tank size though unfortunately their lifespan is believed to be only 23 to 60 days.
Here's a link to a pic and some info:

Does Maturity mean lifespan?

"In the Ruykyus Islands, Japan, they reach maturity in 23 to 60 days."

If so, that's a short time! If not, I wonder how long they live. Hmm.
Cool Article.

Oops

My mistake let me get back to you on that. Sexual maturity is reached in 23 to 60 days.

I've been translating a Japanese Site on Gobioids by Takahiko Mukai, which lists these along with some info by T. Kon and T. Yoshino. So far no luck on lifespan though from what I can tell they may be comparing these to some Gobioids that die right after spawning.
I'll let you know if I find out.

Is this fish a micro-habitat specialist? It would seem likely given it's size. If so, do you know what habitat it...uhhh...habitates?

Ya mean would it be good in a nano tank ? :) Prolly be an excellent choice though the lifespan ( I'm still checking on it ) could be a major drawback unless they spawn like crazy.
The six specimens that have been collected so far have all been from coral reef lagoons. I'm not sure anyone has tried to keep them alive in a reef tank as unfortunately all six critters have been sliced, diced and preserved.

Hmm...I'm just wondering if their size is an adaptation to a certain micro-habitat in the wild. The lagoon would be the "macro" habitat, but a micro-habitat would an anemone that a clown lives in for instance, or seagrass beds for a pipefish, or a certain acropora species for a comensal crab, etc.
