Spicey,
I'm not certain it is Discosoma neglecta and not Discosma carlgreni or D. sanctithomae. It actually came in on what was called a "rainbow mushroom" rock which is various mushrooms attached somewhere in Indo I believe. D. neglecta is from the Carribbean. Prolly just a coincidence but a large shrimp population in that tank as dwindled to nothing. I lost about 7 L. amboinensis (cleaner) and 4 L. debelius (blood red) in the course of a year or so. I never actually saw any of them being eaten. I tried to keep predatory fish out of the tank so I could have shrimp, but you never know. I do have a couple of tile file fish and Red Sea 8-line wrasse in the tank. I also have a royal gramma and a black cap basslet in the tank. This species is increasing faster than the other Discosoma and Ricordea. It's a beautifully colored rock none the less. Kudos to the boys (and girls) in Indo.

I don't know if that's your case, but sometimes they puff up if something stronger stings it (pretty hard to find coral that can be more aggressive than mushrooms). Notice that the "allegeric reaction" is along a line across the surface of the shroom... interesting.

taking a second look, yep, i think you're right.. probably not neglecta.. the neglecta is smoother...yeah, i was surprised that my discosoma could eat a shrimp.. especially a scarlet.. who moves around a lot and quite fast compared to other shrimps.. but nice shroom rock... trying to acquire some red and blue shrooms myself.

My Discosoma neglecta almost ate a peppermint shrimp last night, I had to fight hard to get him out, I was afraid I damaged it, when I kept trying to keep the "escape hole" open for the shrimp, I ended up "scooping" him out with a bent stick....
After that ordeal, I transferred the "killer Shroom" from my 180 to my 50 and today it looks even better than ever......

Red Sea 8-line wrasse in the tank

Was this wrasse in there when the shrimp started dissappearing? Wrasses in general tend to eat shrimp.

Taz,
It is hard to be certain when the shrimp started to disappear in a large tank with lots of hiding places. However the Eight-line wrasse is a Paracheilinus flasher wrasse with a fairly small mouth and is certainly not the adept predator with the skills of many others in the family.
