Having just recectly moved into a house, I've set up my tank downstairs. It's insanely humid down there.

Will a de-humidifier cause a lot of extra evaporation?

Thanks.

I like you have my tank in the basement. I had to go out last year and get a dehumidifier because of the humity. I didnt really notice any big increase of top off when running it. I put the dehumidifer in the room were the tank sets. Its a 12x12 room and tank is view from the other side of the wall in the family room part of the basement. I think i used 1-1.5g of top off a day. Maybe a half gallon more then before. I cut back the time that it ran and that helped.

I was thinking of getting a De-humidifier, but read somewhere that they cost alot to run, as my lights alone are costing me $30 a month already, so i am a bit sceptical about getting one.

Have you guy's noticed any sizable increase in your elec bill?

I live in N Va, and it gets quite humid here

two problems with dehumidifiers is most are loud and they require frequent emptying...if you have the time to rig it to automatically empty into your basements sump area, do it.

all basements need one to stay comfy, though, IMO

I don't mind the emptying side of it, and being the enterprising type i would love the challenge of rigging it to a waste water pipe in my utility room.

The noise is a side issue as it would probably be as noisy as the fan i have down there now anyway

Until i got my 180 reef the room was always the coolest room in the house, now it's just as humid as outdoors at times.

has been bad lately as my auto-top off went titsup and dumped 30 gallons all over the floor, thank heavens i have a wet vac

Anton :P
