Is this guy a true or false percula? I think a false, but want confirmation.

That is a percula.
I HATE the name "false percula" Such a put down for an equaly impressive anemone fish species.
Perculas are false occellaris!

Tough to count spines in that photo - it's the thick black margin on the dorsal fin.

IMO it could possibly be either. A while back Dustin Dorin posted a picture of an ocellaris that had a lot more black than that. I have some ORA ocellaris that have that much black or more as well.

Do you have a recommendation on an anemone for the clown. Sebae seems the easiest to care for of the ones that are percula hosts, but even that is an advanced one. My tank is thriving...It's been up over a year (46 gallon)...I do have plans to get back into a larger one (150 or 200g) in the future (had a 150 about 8 years ago).

I've gone from a gadget freak when I had the 150 to a minimalist with the 46...just a pump and scwd, a prizm and a heater....and a 250 w 10k mh/actinic combo.

Currently it houses a hippo tang, a percula, a tridacna maxima, a long tentacle plate coral and a torch coral, that my percula has almost irritated to death.

I've had a lot of success getting percula and ocellaris to go into Entacmaea quadricolor. (bubble anemones) Some people report less success but these are very hardy anemones, so it might be worth a try.

If it's a wild clown I'd say it is probably percula. Ocellaris can have quite a bit of black though. Pictured is an ocellaris I got from ORA.

It is sometimes very difficult to tell the difference. Often the perk will have wider black bands bordering their white bars than the common clowns. Jim's gut feeling was probably correct, but no way to confirm it. Ocellaris usually have 11 dorsal spines while percula have 9 or 10. It is very difficult to tell on a live fish. If bug really wants to know the fish may have to be sacrificed.

Using only the eyes identify these three clowns. Which two are the most alike? Remember only use the eyes. No cheating.
