29 gallon suggestions

Hey all,

I've got a 29 gallon with wood trim and matching stand that's just sitting empty, and I was thinking I'd set it up in the office at home for a x-mas gift to my SigOther. He's been hinting for months now for his "own" tank . Problem is I have zero ideas for what to put in it. His main thing is he likes to see the smaller critters on the live rock and in the sand, otherwise I've got no restrictions.

I'm thinking for setup a SSB, live rock, HOB skimmer and/or maybe a HOB refugium. There isn't much room under the stand for a sump.

Any thoughts?

If he likes the smaller critters, I think a tank of goby's, shrimp, stars, and some of the larger hermits (be careful!!) would be nice. You dont NEED a sump-its just usually a good idea, however I have a 29 gallon and its doing fine without. Also I find the HOB skimmers to work fine too.

How much are you willing to spend on the tank? If you want you can get the higher lighting and have a reef, but Im not sure how much you want to spend or what he wants. I personally like the Coralife aqualight for cheap but effective PC lighting-it will do the job for all but really SPS and the higher-end-of-the-spectrum clams.

Money isn't really that much of an issue which is probably why I can't decide what to do.

In the past I set up my tanks with "cheapness" being the main thing :lol:

Hey lawdawg. my 29 is my favorite tank. I like the small animals better as well. I have a couple of clown gobies: yellow and green, a couple of blue green torpedo/worm gobies, yellow watchman with a pistol shrimp, a skunk cleaner, brittle star, and some small hermits all with live rock and their hitchhikers. I added enough LR to get the tank started then when I found a really cool piece at the lfs I bought it. The tank has really come together.

Seriously, I'd put a fridmani or a Royal gramma in there, along with a percula clown or small basslet. The ultimate fish though would be a twin spot or mystery wrasse mkay? Then a few scarlet hermits, an emerald crab, a cleaner shrimp (I'm saying all this based on the fact that he likes the little critters, like me) some nassarius snails for the sand bed, a fighting conch, star polyps, some mushrooms and a nice Euphylia or two.
I would use shallow sand bed, but have some bigger grains in there to encourage lots little pods and such.

Hey, I hadn't thought of that! I used to keep dwarf lions and really liked them, maybe a FWLR pred. tank!

The only problem with that is, the ONLY thing in the tank will be that fish, along with corals. You will lose the joy of watching all the little crabs and shrimp.
Hey, how about a pair of harlequin shrimp? Easy to to keep and care for, you just need to keep a few chocolate chip stars in the sump. Cut a leg off once every other week or so and feed to the shrimp. I had a pair in a 7 gallon nano for quite some time, and they would spawn regularly.

Uh, I dunno why (I have fed live fish to my lions before) but that really creeps me out and I know I couldn't do it. Probably says something about my deep dark soul .

I think the Pred tank is out, I like too many of the smaller fishes for this tank...

I mean Tail spot wrasse, Pseudocheilinus ocellatus, not Twin Spot. My bad. They are also called 5-bar and Mystery wrasse. Looky looky! One of these and a fridmani, maybe a third fish to balance out any potential aggression problems occuring when only two fish are kept in a tank.
