Chiller??

Looking to add chiller. what size is needed for 220 gallon glass tank.

What is best temp to keep reef?

Any brand better than another?

Can't really answer your questions too much but maybe I can help you get answers from those who could.....

What temp does your tank run currently? What do you plan to keep? (Most ppl seem to run their tanks somewhere around 80 degrees F. but it kinda depends on what is being kept..)

i have a 1/4 horse on my 125 and it keeps the temp at 76 or 77, for your size tank a 1/3 or 1/2 will probably work the price differece between a 1/3 and a 1/2 is not that much and a bigger chiller will mean that temp will stay constant without the chiller burning itself out by coming on all the time.

What does your tank run at now? Unless the tank is running very warm i would say a 1/3 would work.

Keep in mind the heat and noise dumped into the room where the chiller is located. Stay away from the drop in coil models unless you can live with the limited distance the chiller can be located from the tank.

Usually, you'll need a 1/3hp. Of course, this will all depend on how much you need to drop the temp. I like Aqualogic. Mine has been a workhorse for a decade! I've previously owned a few others, but Aqualogic is my favorite.

I agree with the Aqua Logic recomendation, they are extremely well built chillers.

In all actuality the best thing for a chiller would be to tun 24/7 as with all air conditioning systems as well.

Now whether or not this is good for your wallet is another story.


I would recommend atleast 1/3 hp you also have to factor in your flow rate and pull down rate.

I used to recommend chillers all the time before aquanetics shut down.

Aqua logic is probably the way to go.
