The public aquarium I've had direct experience with uses water piped in from a few miles off of Long Beach. It is VERY HEAVILY filtered, with special attention being paid to sterilization.

Dewr, if you can get to Monterey Bay, I believe that they basically have a pipe of their own filtered natural water, just like Birch Aquarium. Why not just take advantage of that?

Btw, I used to use RealOcean exclusively (back when I had a tank and customers) - nothing BETTER or EASIER, in my opinion! As I recollect, that was take from the far side of Catalina Island.

Hmm. The Bodega Marine Lab doesn't use any kind of sterilization, and we've always used their water without any disease problems. I know they are setting up a series of settling weirs or something to reduce the amount of particulates in the water, but no sterilization AFAIK. I know they ozonize the water going back out to the ocean, though...very important difference :D

SHAME on you, Fatal Morgana!

Anywho, sorry seamaiden, but I ain't about to take an 85' Silverado with a suspension that in all respects rides like Chevy's slogan ("like a [freaking] rock"; gotta hand it to them for being honest!) all the way down to MB to get sea water! :P

Matt, good info, but I might need directions should I take the idea an apply... Cool?

I don't think thye provide water to hobbyists, but I may be wrong there. Being Dewr is over a 100 miles from me in SC, I doubt he'll drive yet another 50 to get to MB :) His best bet is to find someone who carries Catalina Norcal locally (he serves tons of stores in the greater bay area) or got to Point Reyes (which has really clean wate).
