I have read most of the article on using kalkwasser as for replacement of water lost. I have a 180 gallon tank the water evaporate very fast, it seem to evaporate more then a gallon per day. So my question is what is the right amount of vinegar and kalkwasser I should be using for, assuming I am using 7 gallon a week for my water replacement. I do worry of putting too much vinegar in the tank. I mixed vinegar and kalkwasser first before mix it with water. The article suggest 15 mL vinegar for every 1/2 teaspoon of kalkwasser per quart of H2O. In order to mix a gallon of water, I would need 2 teaspoon of kalkwasser, and 60 mL of vinegar. So for a week I probably will use up to 300 ml of vinegar. Isn't this too much to put in the tank for 1 week. Any advice is greatly appreciate.

Right now, I use one heaped teaspoon of kalk for every gallon of water, plus 60 ml of vinegar. I have been previously using 40 ml for over a year with no issues (and 15 ml for quite a while before that). This is used in a 50 gallon tank.
What are you reasons for adding vinegar?
In my case it is done to help with the higher ph as a result of dosing kalk.
In any case, start at a low dose (15 ml) for a while and increase as needed. Make the usual careful observations while doing this.

I don't have any reason. I read the article in here that say adding vinegar is a win win situation so I just used it. As I describe, my tank evaporate a lot of water a gallon + per day. Currently I am using 1 teaspoon of kalkwasser per gallon with 15ml vinegar. Since the rate of evaporation from my tank so fast I worry adding too much vinegar will cause my system crash. So far my tank is doing fine. I only been dosing about 2 wks. I was wondering should I add more vinegar or stay at this rate for now. Thanks again for replying my message.

Is this your only supplement for cal/alk?
If so, and you find that it is not quite keeping up with your cal/alk requirements then adding more vinegar could help.
Also, if your ph is running on the high side because of adding kalk, you could also increase it for this reason.
If you want to increase and you are apprehensive about it, just do so slowly. Based on my experience, I don't think you have much to worry about.

If you lose more than a gallon a day, I would recommend you go with a kalk reactor. It's basically a mixing chamber filled with kalk and water. The unit is air sealed off so not to allow CO2 from entering the vessel. There is a mixer that turns on only a few minutes a day. When it stirs, it is making another batch of saturated kalk water.

The kalk reactor water inlet usually goes to a RODI source, the outlet of the kalk reactor hooked up to a doser pump. The doser dispense a preset amount of liquid to your tank 24 hours a day in regular interval.

With this setup, you set it to dispense 1.5Gal a day, and you set it and forget it. No more fussing of jugs and mess.

Do a search on kalkwasser. Basically you mix enough to saturate the water adding extra will just settle to the bottom of the container. I never used vinegar but many people have good experience with it. One caution - I was not able to keep my CA up over time as I was not able to add enough kalk because the amount of evaporation (and hence the amount of make-up water) was not enough. Go for it but be sure and check the CA levels.

yes, marc this is the only supply that I use for Ka/ar now. I do add iodine in once a week and B-ionic magnesium once a week. I plan on only using kalkwasser as replacement of water evaporate and doing 10% water change in the fulture when I done using my existence chemical.
Thanks I will look into the kalk reactor. It seems to be the good solution for the long run. I plan on doing 10% water change monthly for now and watch to see how the tank doing. My tank is only up about 2 months, so it is still a long way for it to mature.
