In my expierence I've only had one protein skimmer that worked wonders with my reef tank. It was a Berlin protein skimmer and I really liked it. Now I'm looking at something I've never done before, a hang on the back style skimmer. I went to the LFS and priced a venturi style protein skimmer at $179 bucks. It was made by the same company as the Berlin I had earlier ( I think) I'll have to stop back by there and get the exact brand name and model of it. But until then I was wondering what some of you guys out there use with success. My tank will be a 55 gallon FOWLR. I'm in hawaii and the only live rock I can take is anything that is washed up on shore and then there is some coral skeletons I've collected on the beach and will use as well. So to make up for the lack of biological filtration I have HOB filters for mechanical filtration. I will be doing a sand bed of about 2-3 inches. I have a ten gallon tank FOWLR that I'm going to use some of the rock and sand from to seed the 55 with.
I'm still contimplating making my own stand to replace the metal stand I have now and putting a rubbermaid sump underneath for a sump. Also I'm not overly sure what I want to do for lights. I'm thinking about what I want to do with lighting, I'm thinking ordering a kit off of hellolights.com, cuting some glass for a glass canopy and then making a wooden canopy to give it a nice clean look. So as you can see I'm still in the planning stage.
Anyways, sorry to get off subject the question is about HoB skimmers.
