I just bought a diy regent metal halide set up 70 watts. The ballast seems to be getting really hot and has a slight hum to it.Is this normal? I beleive the ballast is a wpi.

What is wpi?

For magnetic ballast, it is normal for the hum and heat.

Can't view the post because I don't have an account....

Anyway, older e-ballast does hum. They pretty much got away with the humming issue with the newer ballasts up to 200W or so, but that really depends on the manufacturer. Give them a buzz and make sure it is normal, if I were you. Good luck.

(When e-ballast goes, it gives off nasty smell that will lingers for days. I got a few cheapo e-ballasts (a few dollar, low wattage ones) that busted the capacitor and resistor on me. )

Yeah I believe this one is probably 7 years old!! I am thinking about switching to an Icecap ballast as I may get more power.
