I just bought a diy regent metal halide set up 70 watts.The ballast seems to be getting really hot and has a slight hum to it.Is this normal? I beleive the ballast is a wpi.
I beleive it is electronic.I dont really know honestly as this is my first metal halide set up.I am just worried about my place burning down because something is wrong with the ballast.

Anyway, older e-ballast does hum. They pretty much got away with the humming issue with the newer ballasts up to 200W or so, but that really depends on the manufacturer. Give them a buzz and make sure it is normal, if I were you. Good luck.
(When e-ballast goes, it gives off nasty smell that will lingers for days. I got a few cheapo e-ballasts (a few dollar, low wattage ones) that busted the capacitor and resistor on me. )
