i am re-plumbing my return pump and this time will need to use some threaded fittings, it was just glued slip fittings before. my question is how much teflon do i need to make sure it is a secure? i put on a lot my first time but it was very hard to twist on, but i also dont want it to leak or suck in air. tia

If you are talking about thread tape I put about 2 wraps on the threads, remember to wrap the tape in the op. way so when you tighten the fittings the tape will not unwrap. Always check for leaks.

Even fitting is different, since they are not manufactured to tight specification. The amount of tape to use is 2 wrap at minimum. As mentioned, test for leak, and redo if necessary.

I no longer us teflon tape. Instead there is a plumbing thread sealer used on water lines. You put it on the threads with a brush and if its too much it simpley pushes out. Never had a leak. Its safe for drinking water. Oaty makes the one I use and it has teflon in it.

I wrap it and wrap it and wrap it and wrap it untill I have to take a wrench to it to tighten it down.

I also use the Teflon paste. I haven't done a lot of fitting that way but they seem to work well. Especially on the pressure side of my pool filter. I always had trouble stopping the drip until I used the paste.
