But I do tend to favor RDO sponsors for purchases, if they have a survey form I let them know I found out about them on reefs.org.

I bought a chiller from Marine Depot about 2 weeks before the latest power buy. Spent more money on a lesser model

Perhaps an expanded series of FAQ threads are in order. Maybe a series of locked, view only threads about various fishes and their compatibility. (I can certainly help in this department)
Just an idea.

Jim

We do have archives where we squirrel away some of the choice threads: http://www.reefs.org/phpBB2/index.php?c=6.

If you or anyone would like to write up FAQ's, etc, we'd be interested in seeing how we could implement them either on our bulletin board or in our Library.

>...You know like, nudibrachs, seahares, sea slugs, cuccumbers all showing up on a search for say, sea slug or slugs.

Very minor point, but just want to say that sea cuccumbers is very different from others you listed. In fact, they are in different phyllum.

I love these boards...............................
I started with these boards back in 97'-98' with my first reef tank 110 tall(username was dhsreef). Living in a tiny town in the Colorado mountains made getting good info very difficult, not to mention live stock ,this board was a god sent.I am on my second tank now with a bit more experience. However my knowledge is that of a pin tip compared to some people on these boards, and I don't want to look stupid posting on a topic I am not completely versed in ............. nothing but my hang up I do post when I have info to give

I agree that people here is a lot more shy when it come to posting. However, never afraid to say anything silly, since that's how some of us learn.

How about simply removing 'sea' from the name? (with the exception of seahorses)

I find it difficult to keep up with different forums, and find reefs.org to have a familliar, homey atmosphere, with people that I actually recognize! I got my start here, and here I shall stay. :D

Just out of curiosity, is there something more the mods and admins could be doing to make this an even better place?

the one major beef i have w/the site, from a tekky standpoint, is the incredibly poor search function (or lack of plain english explanation on how to tweak it for a particular type of search)

it would be nice , if the engine can't be changed, to at least have an faq w/specific and concise directions on how it works/how to utilize it for certain types of searches (the blurb about 'and/or' is really little help, for non puter savvy folks like me  )

example:

if i type in a thread's specific title, verbatim, how do i limit the engine to bring up only the thread w/that exact sequence of words ?

not only do i get more than that particular thread, if there are 2 threads w/that title, and the only diff. is one has 'part 2' at the end of it, it may not turn up, but threads w/only some of the words will.

try doing a search for 'it was a dark and stormy night' and you'll get 'it was a dark and stomy night, part 2' and some other threads that contain 'dark', or 'stormy', but the thread titled 'it was a dark and stormy night' doesn't show up, even when specifying the forum and author

it also seems as if older material that isn't from the old bb or archives just doesn't get reached by the engine sometimes

then again, it could just all be cuz i'm a puter dumdum

vitz, the original "'it was a dark and stormy night'" thread might be deleted from the server because it was not labelled for archive. Just guessing.

Maybe that's why.

why should the search engine only turn up what's archived?

plus, i doubt sump threads like either of those are archived to begin with

I don't know how it work on RDO specifically, but most webmaster usually delete thread from the database after certain amount of time, unless it is marked for archive. The original thread was not marked for archive, and the reason you can't find it anymore is probably because it was deleted from the database.

If you want to find a thread with a very specific title like that, I just type in "very AND dark AND stormy AND night" That will ONLY find threads containing all four of those words. It helps if you can remember a very unique word from that thread that hasn't been used many times on RDO (Try searching 'polyplacophoran' for instance :D). If you type in "very dark stormy night" it will find all threads with any one of those four words.

Try it out on "Noah AND didn't AND really AND build AND ark"

Reefs.org is a top notch site. RC may be larger/busier, but absolutely SUCKS when it comes to know-it-all ppl with something out to prove/boastfulness/bashing, etc. It reminds me of being in high school. Here, it feels more like a well-conducted college class (with a few troublesome individuals in the back of course!).

I admit that I spend about equal times among the boards for different reasons.

I just take a deep breath to relax when logging into RC.

I sit back and relax when I log in to reefs.org.

To each his/her own!

I just read a thread over there on pearlfish. It's a type of fish that paradsitizes sea cucumbers and starfish by living inside them and eating their guts, basically. Well, the pearlfish enters and exits the cuke via the anus.

The thread was 7 pages of how funny it was to say "butt fish" and not a single piece of info on the biology of the pearlfish, how to care for it, etc. I think I have a fair sense of humor but it gets pretty old after 7 pages. It has nothing to do with the way RC is run, but it's a bit tiresome to read through silly posts like that when thousands of people are logged on and doing it. Having said that, there are valuable forums there like the Cephalopod forum and local club forums that are only frequented by a few knowledgeable people.

Just my 2 cents.

The only reason I go there is for the local club forums - I tried to get my club to move here, but they are creatures of habit.
I think the ceph forum there could be useful, but it is actually pretty rare for something of substance to be posted on it - so many forums means that the interesting stuff usually gets posted somewhere else.

I think most of what has been described about RC can be attributed to is hugeness. With so many people and so many forums it becomes necessary to do a bunch of work to find something you want to read.
Having the most members and forums isn't always the best thing.
