What is S.O.P for holding/housing Some1 elses Corals?

I see this going on more and more lately. Peeps going out of the hobby temporaraly....What is S.O.P for holding/housing some1 elses Corals? What happens if they are away for a year or more? What if they die(the corals i mean..lol)? Eric is asking this same ques. as i post this, what happens if he finds some hot native girl on his travels and dosent return (its only an example E, dont get excited,lol), only to come back with a full beard, sun tan, and askin "hey whrs all my stuff?" What if you need to get out of the hobby...There are so many variables on what can happen ...Im naive about this, i feel maybe i may have been off the mark in my own personal opinion on this subject...i need other points of view.

• Coral deaths happen (zero responsibility)

On the flip side the babysitter should

1. Take care of said animals as if they were their own
2. Know what livestock they can and cannot support
3. Gets a frag or 2 for babysitting

my only firm rule is that both people know that the holder is not responsible if the coral, fish, clam ect... dies.

I have done this on several occasions and have "paid the price" on both.

I would add that in the future, I'll only do this for someone who is understanding enough of how fragile this hobby is and that there is "0" liability for "things that happen" (I know this was already said, but the first part is important).

Also, while this is typically an altruistic move, I am in it for the frags -when they return to pick them up I want frags!

I think most people on this site at least understand that if something dies ... it happens. But I know when I've taken care of people (okay, Eric's) corals in the past, I've been really careful to take care of them as if they were my own - including target feeding, etc. And sure I got a few frags out of it, but I don't necessarily expect it.

as u jest ,u bring up a point im trying to make...what if thy grows into a 2' colony? i dont want to inflect but im not talking just corals dying...thrs alot more going on...

If you can grow a small colony into a 2 footer in a few months I'm coming over to buy some of your water.

If you're talking about holding onto someone's corals for a year or so then I'd work that out with the owner. It also depends if we initally agreed on a year or if it ended up being a year. If I said "Yo hold these for a month or two" then came back a year later for them I'd expect something closer to what I originally gave you.

I think that's where the frag for babysitting comes in. It's like leaving a colony in someone's tank and then when you get it you leave them with the growth that happened in their tank (the frag) and take your colony back.

if you're holding it for a year, it's probably encrusted and all too. at that point i'd say keep the colony and give the original owner a frag the size of what he/she originally had.

first some one gives you a favor of some hope of sort. and if you are nice enough you can have your stuff a year later. after person took care of it, spent money , time, energy for the care of the animals. if you want a garantee with the person you dont know - write a contract.

Fish and clams are obviously a different fragging story. Zero liability.

BTW, did I mention zero liability. The baby sitter is not only taking care of these corals out of the goodness of their heart, but also spending money on supplements (they do get used up more with a heavier coral bio-load).

All great points made so far, but think we also need to take a look at the 'other' scenearios that can possibly come up.
-You're the babysitter and YOU have an emergency of your own and can no longer take care of your tank..what do you do?
-Time..how long is too long? Do we have the right to ask someone to babysit our corals for a full year? At that point, shouldn't we be selling our corals and asking the buyers to frag us back a piece when we're ready to set up again? (did we leave our tanks running all that time??)
-What is the time limit? Should it be clearly defined when the deal is made, should extenuating circumstances be spoken about at that point?
-I like the idea of what grows in the sitters tank, stays with the sitter..a fair idea. And there can be no blame for death..as Russ so eloquently said..zero liability.
