minimum sized tank for a hawaiian dragon eel?

really depends on the eel, wouldnt be a good idea to have barebottom with a sand eel or something. I would put a small layer of sand down with whatever eel you get, will probably be a little easier on their bellies.

do snowflakes/dragons dig? actually scrap the dragon, i need more expeirence with eels before i put that much funding into one. i was thinking of putting in a one inch sand bed layer for aesthetics but they seem to be just too much trouble cause u dont get the beneifits of a deep sand bed or bare bottom. plus with the amount of waste an eel would produce wouldnt it be better to go bare bottom to allow eaasy syphoning? im still a fairly new reefkeeper "1 year" so this is just speculation.

Yes both will dig (more like fan with their tails). A live sand bed wouldn't do any good with either eel though so it's a moot point as they'll redistribute the substate wherever they want. :wink: Siphoning the sand and skimming is the best way to keep the tank clean.
Go with a couple of inches of sand.

Any cleanup crew will eventually be eaten, so you, the siphonning and the skimmer are it.
When I had a Snowflake I had Chitons flourishing in the tank though, they were too small, plus Snowflakes can't see worth a darn.
What type of powerheads?

Nope, it's true. Eels got a wicked sense of smell-there eyes are almost useless, and they don't do you any good in a dark cave.

the powerheads are otto ph2000 and mozoo 1600....... if yourve eva heard of them. so what would be better an external pump thats plumbed to feed and draw from the main tank "no sump" or 2 or 3 powerheads?
