Being it is a pendant, hang it at about 15" above the tank and lower it an inch every week. You can lower it to as much as 4" as long as the bulb is shielded and the heat will not be a problem. However, 4" will not give you enough light distribution for a 29 gallon. 8-10" should be just right.
