i always have a tough time putting on and taking off vinyl tubing. is there any tricks to getting them on the barbs or taking them off? i can just cut it with a razor to get it off but i am afraid i will cut into the barbs. putting them on is even harder. tia!

I have the same problem. It helps if the tubeing is sized correctly. A little too small and it is a real problem to get over the barbs. Too large and it doesn't seal. Petroleum jelly can help also.

use hot water to warm it up helps, but for some connection, nothing short of razor will work. Use a plastic knife that is softer than the PVC but harder than vinyl to cut it... you can cut half way thru and rip it open with a piler...

Like FM said, hot water helps for getting the hose on. We just heat water up in a pot and bring the pot over to where we are working.

I usually just cut off hose when I want to remove it.

You can also hit it with a hair dryer for putting it on or taking it off.

I have always used a lighter and heated it and spun it as I was heating it to prevent it from burning. Anyway, hotwater sounds like a good idea.

Good god, don't use petroleum jelly. Or vegetable oil. Would you put either of these in your tank water?

Hot water, or a hair dryer, works very well. As does a girlfriend who has bigger biceps than you :D

on topic........a few years ago, I got a heat gun. Much better than soaking in hot water and much more effective than a hair drier. I think they are $20 at home depot.
I am a typical reefer so I am always changing the plumbing....a good investment, you don/t have to be precice on the fittings

Dan gave me the "vegetable oil" advice quite a while ago <keep your jokes to yourselves ;)> and it worked like a charm.

Considering it's made of vegetables and edible, I quickly got over my concern about trace amounts entering my tank.
