Hello everyone,

I have a Oceanic 54G corner tank with the oceanic cap/lid. Until recently I was running 3x55W PC and heat from the lighting was not a problem. then I upgraded to a 250W MH. So my current lighting set-up is 2x55W PCs + 1x250W MH. Heat build-up has now become a major issue. I tried installing fans on one end of the canopy (2x30cfm) but I cannot bring the temp down.
I think the problem is that being a corner tank, the exhaust doesn't have anywhere to vent (2"-3" from the wall), no matter how many fans I have. Also the water surface area is a lot less than a straight 55g. Any ideas on how to reduce the heat? Exaust from top? Acrylic between lighting and water? Please help...

Thank in advance

Two fans....One in and One out. Put the one facing out upwards and away.

How far is your MH from the water? Do you hav a sump and if so do you have a fan blowing into the water in the sump? Does your hood have an open top or open back?

I would also like to add if you add a fan over your sump try to set it away from the water a little and have it blowing in the water. Fans that are directly above the water normally break or cause problems because water wants to condense on it.

MH/PCs are about 6"max from the water (no shield). I cannot increase the height any since the oceanic hood is about 8-10" in height.

The top has a lid on it (lights mounted under this lid) and the sides have two cutouts (one side has the fans, the other is open, but both sides are 2" from the wall).

Yes I do have a sump also (15H, that as big a sump i could fit in the cabinet). Perhaps I will try to put a fan down there too.

Is 84F too high of a temp? I run a Sen700 insump. How much will the temp drop if I run it externally?

I figure, 1fan on the top, 1 in the sump, and running the return externally might be enough to control the temp. What do you guys think?

Thank you for the replies and keep them coming!

84 is getting up there. What is your room temp? If you don't have a/c, I'd get a cheap window unit to run in the summer if it's a room you can close off with doors. Get the room to 70 and the fans on the tank should be enough. 14 degrees over ambient would be a lot.
