I ahm thinking of ordering some coral frags today. I am in NY and the temp is only 40 degrees this week.

Is it ok to order and ship these corals when its this cold? I know they use heat packs but will they be ok?

Any recommendations?

I had a sinularia shipped to me not too long ago, maybe it was like 40 out, possibly lower, and it came in fine. You just have to make sure that you get the coral inside like the moment it hits your doorstep. :)

I would reply but this is almost the same discussion that got me booted off of you know where
so why not try speaking your mind here - without the "you know where" bashing? ;)

I thought some of the shippers include heat packs. In the past (distant) I have gotten stuff with the heat packs without a problem (in NY). They charge an extra couple of dollars.

Rob,

I placed an order from etropicals.com in the winter and was very happy. They packed the order very well and had a couple of heat packs. I paid for next day via Fedex and had the order sent to the local facility. I got to the Fedex place just after they opened at 9:00 AM for customer pick-up and had my shipment home by 9:15.

I have answered similar posts and have always recommended you pick up the shipment. Do not have it sitting in the back of an unheated delivery truck all day because they could not find your house. It may cost extra, but consider Saturday delivery also.

I've ordered both freshwater fish and marine critters this time of year without a problem, however I do either have it delivered on Saturday; or pick it up at the shipper directly unless someone will be at home to accept delivery.

If I know for a fact it's going to be sub-zero (either at my end or where it's being shipped from) or if they are forcasting a blizzard that could delay the shipment I'll hold off for a few days until the weather clears.

As a matter of fact just yesterday I got in an order of snails, crabs and other clean up crew critters and the average outdoor temp on the trip for them was under 32 degrees. They came through just fine.
