I can't figure what I'm doing wrong. My reactor has been running for over 3 weeks. The first 3 weeks, everything was great. Alk at a constant 9ish, and calcium at around 400. At the end of October I did a 40g water change, on my 180. And ever since My reactor hasn't been working good. My Alk is going from 9.5 to 8.3 overnight and back up to the low 9's again. I haven't adjusted my bubble count, or effluent. And I can't get my Ph of my efflunt to stay constant. It's bouncing around from 6.2 to 7.0. Anyone have any suggestions? It's extremely fustrating, and wondering if using a 2 part would be easier in the long run. Thanks guys.

Two part is almost always easier, unless you misdose it. But it will take more time than a properly adjusted ca rxtor, and it costs more.

The problem you have has nothing to do with the water change. You need to readjust the reactor. Keep in mind that it takes several hours for the pH to stabilize , and you have to make sure the recirculation pump inside the rxtor is working properly.

In the long run a reactor is cheaper and lends greater stability. I would not invest in one without a Ph controller personally with an electronic solenoid to control CO2. If for some reason the effluent gets too acidic it cuts co2 flow till the amount of co2 in the reaction chamber lowers then it cuts it back on again.

I have had really good luck with 2 parts in the past but like 7e said it's pricey! You can buy the B-Ionic and Kent 2 part solutions in quantity but I imagine shipping on a 5 gallon container will add up fast. Also in a larger tank you could be looking at using as much as a cup to a cup and a half per day to keep up with Ca/Alk demands!

Having said that one of the nicest tanks I have seen by a local reefer was accomplished by doing just that - pic of said tank below.

Hope that helps.
