Well, doing a water change last night I shut off the mag9 return. And of course after the water change I plugged it back in and no more pump. I tried cleaning it and soaking it in vinegar overnight with no luck.

So currently the tank has no sump running. The sump contains the Skimemr, heater and controller for the heater and fan.

Since this is down now I am thinking of redoing the sump to use external pumps instead of the Mag. I have a Blueline 40HD on my closed loop that I could have used if the sump was drilled.

My plan is to find someone to make me a custom sump. Anyone?
Get a secong blueline for my sump return.

This will probably take a few weeks. I wil lmove the controller and hetare to the display for now but no skimmer. Since the tank is already in shambles with the hair algae nightmare, how bad can the tank get with noe skimemr for a few weeks?

I used a screw together union on the upstream side of the pump about 6 inches higher than the pvc U that feeds from the sump to the pump. When starting the pump for the first time I used a funnel and added water so I wouldn't dry start the pump. When the power goes out it only drains to the height of the water in the sump so the pump doesn't go dry.

I guess you could also push some water backwards through the line...

Get a power head and a section of tubing and push the water in through the discharge prior to the first running. After that is should be fine.
