So I won't tell anyone . . .

Since they'e SPS I really don' want them!

Thanks. I would love a bright orange gorgonian if anyone has one!

B

If you'd settle for purple in about a month I can hook you up. Mine's getting tall enough again to frag off.

Nice grow out system. What is it exactly that you got? Skills? :D

You got it. I haven't built a coral system in 2 years. Hence the "still". Amazingly enough, I've been designing and building systems for public aquarium display, quarantine, aquaculture and experiments for seven years now, and this is the first one that when I switched it on, it worked perfectly.

(put me on the list for a cervicornis frag :) )

Permits please? :P

I hereby grant him permission.....send him 2 in fact

Psst...now that you've got 2 send me one! :D

(((shudder )))

What? Its the ingenuity of man that lets us live longer, better, and more medically challenging lives! :)

Just don't drink the water or eat the food and you'll be mostly ok, sorta.

These babies have a half life similar to uranium

Also, a big change since this thread was at the top, I now use kalkwasser only. No reactor, just drip in as replacement. Seems we have a significant CO2 buildup in house here, and the pH in my tanks was always around 8.0-8.2 with the homemad two part. Using kalkwasser has raised the pH to an almost constant 8.4 and increased the aragonite saturation state. This has made quite an impact on the overall prosperity of the systems. So, I'd say just use what works best in your situation.

Also, a year ago I would have said that the Atlantic staghorn is the fastest growing coral I've come across, Atlantic or Pacific. Porites astreoides has blown doors on that. I've NEVER seen anything like it. I broke off a small corner of colony as a frag. In 3 DAYS it had regrown over the exposed skeleton.

I can't give it to you legally.

That's because you have them from your job (probably research related)?

I assume that if you would have gotten them from LR you could though, right? If not, those are some really tough laws!

K...don't holler at me, but I gotta ask (cuz I'm a coral n00b)

*Why* can't you frag legally? Not bustin on ya, just what is it about this coral that makes it special?

Is it endangered or ??

Thx galleon :)

BTW, I *hate* your tanks...just absolutely nasty and I would *NEVER* want something like that in my home....

*sigh* Can you just feel the envy??? All kidding aside, they are some gorgeous tanks.

They are caribbean hard corals. All hard coral from the area is restricted and only collectable for people with the correct permits. No one else is allowed to own them, despite where they came from.

Interesting...so if someone had the license and were to attempt to tank raise these, they *still* couldn't give away/sell aquacultured varieties unless the person had the proper license?

I think the main issue is that zoos and aquariums cannot sell livestock to the public.

Its like the Baltimore aquarium breeding frogs- if they cannot give the excess to other zoos they have to destroy them.

This is not actually the case. Possession is not an issue. Transfer, transport, and collection are what are generally not allowed.

This is also true.

So then it is legal if it comes in on a piece of aquacultured live rock and grows in your tank?

As far as I know, yes.

Hey Chris, any updates? How does your garden grow?

Hi Dan, there are only a few coral frags in the no rock tank at the moment, and I haven't been around for the past couple weeks to check on them, I basically dumped them in it and disappeared. So the tank has had no food, just light and a kalkwasser drip. I'll be there tomorrow so we'll see how things look.

I also glued some staghorn to a sheet of white acrylic in the display to see what pops up.

Yes, that chunk of rock is just a giant piece of staghorn encrustation from when a fall broke all the branches off. It's finally starting to sprout new branches.
