I did not have good luck with flames and corals, he ate my sps, but only sps and only certain ones.

I have had very good luck with the Cherub angel, C. argi, and I hear they are supposed to be the most reef safe little angel, but who knows. I had him with clams and all kind of corals.

My philosophy on dwarf angels in a reef: don't add one unless you are fully aware you might have to catch and remove it. I personally think dwarf angels are very cool fish and lovely additions to a tank, so I think it is worth the risk you may have to catch one.

Fwiw, I was able to catch two flame angels out of my 155 reef within a couple of days of seeing trouble, using a trap and patience.

i agree with laura, of all the dwarf angels, i would say the pygmy (cherub) angel is the most reef friendly fish.. i've had the flame and coral beauty and they can be hit or miss with corals... my coral beauty has killed a few corals.. all angels are nippers.. to what degree can vary from one type to another or even within the same type of fish, from fish to fish...

I've tried about a dozen dwarf species. Zero luck myself. I've seen it done, but I'd regard Centropyges playing nice in reefs as the exception rather then the rule.

I'm on my second dwarf angel in my 75 reef,, the first was an adult Coral Beauty who nipped everything ,, SPS, zoos, LPS,,, especially my open brain. He had to go,, but I traded him for a tiny 1" Potter's Angel and he's been a model citizen and my favorite fish ever since.

All dwarf andgels are hit and miss but usually ok more than not from what i have read and had experience with the three best choices are Argi, Flameback, and Potters though the latter can be tough to keep.

I had a coral beauty for a few years in my softy tank - never saw him touch a coral once. That said, every fish has different tastes just like people.

You can always try the genicanthus angels. They're a little bigger than the dwarf angels, but smaller than the big guys, and should do well in a 120. They are planktivores, and shouldn't bother your corals at all.

All the Genicanthus spp. are entirly reefsafe.

I wouldn't write off the entire Centropyge genus just yet. IMO, it's worth trying out one. Just as an example, we have a bicolor angel on campus that has lived in a 135 gallon soft coral reef tank for 8 years or so. C. bicolor is notorious for being a coral nipper, yet this particular fish is not a problem. JimM will attest to C. argi being a pretty much reefsafe angel as well. If you're willing to catch it, I say go for it.

I have heard more stories about these guys eating LPS than being entirely reef safe. Don't know about SPS, though.

I agree with everyone. Dwarf angels can be a dangerous addition to a nice reef with plenty of corals. However, in the Florida Aquarium, they have an awsome tank with lps, sps, zoo's, and a coral beauty. They dont seem to have problems, the corals are always awsome and healthy. But you never know, its hit or miss. When i set up my 46 gal. reef, im gonna move my 25 gal. fish and invert. tank into it. I have a coral beauty in there, so i guess ill find out too. lol .

The most reef-safe angels, IME, are Bellus, Masked Swallowtail, and Wantanabe. Fortunately, they are some of the prettiest, as well.

Peace,

Chip
