Wait! - Crap, I have that backwards... - Sorry man..

So lower the tube for dry skimmate? I think it's as low as it will go and it pulls out mostly water. The cup fills in about a week.

For dry skimmate, either lengthen the riser tube or reduce the water level inside the skimmer. The main purpose is to allow longer foam accumulation time, giving more time for moisture in the bubble to work their way back down.

Reverse for wetter skimmate.

When you are doing wet skimmate, their is no worry for fluctuating salinity level, as whatever that was unbalanced (very minor compared to the whole volume of water in the system), will be corrected at the next water change.

Gradual shift in salinity is not the biggest concern for typical reef tanks.

How is the skimmer sitting in the sump. If it is in more the 8" of water you may have to put it on a stand. How long have you been running the skimmer? My ER took 2 weeks to break in really good.

I run what I consider medium skimate.

I don't have mine running right now but I know I had to lower my riser tube to get drier skimmate out of my ES5-2 which was in 7" of water, the wet stuff would directly parallel the top of my riser. - When I had it in 10" of water (well above the recommended level) then yeah, I had to raise it, at its lowest setting there it would pretty much blow the cover off the cup.

Hmm, now I'm starting to think that the reason why my ASM only skims wet is because it's in about 15 inches of water. :?

Although the output is about 3 inches above the water level, so I don't know why that would be making a difference. Double :?

Try lifting up the whole rig 8 inches if you can. It could make a difference.

Having said that, I like wet foam. I like the gunk to start sticking to the plastic way up near the top of the riser tube. I do have to clean it often, but the 2 minutes it takes every day is kind of a non-factor for me. :)

In my ideal world, I'd like to dry skim only. But it seems much harder for me to get dry skimmate consistantly. The problem I have is that the first day's dry skimmate forms a 'foam plug' that effectively keeps any more dry foam from enterting the cup.

Therefore, I usually just skim wet.
