Does Halimeda really grow that fast? I have some that hitchhiked on a rock, planning on SPS in the tank. Do ya think I should remove it now?

Didn't mean to freak you out. It was the only time I kept halimeda. With the clams, I was dosing Kalk, religiously, and the halimeda went nuts. All of the coralline turned white and the clams died before I realized where all of the calcium was going.

The halimeda I used to have was great...you could prune about 6" every two weeks, and that's all you needed to do.

I need to get some established in the new reef.

Peace,

If you have thriving plant life you will find filterless, skimmerless, no water changes can substain a tank indefinately.

 You should see some of the open sewers I've created following that philosophy.

I think some macros in the reef can be a real pain, particularly if you aren't skimming. That grape caulerpa is the worst, as noted above. If you conditions are good halimeda can be really beautiful, and I never had it go sexual. However, it sucks up way too much calcium. I pull it out. I have a little experimental 58 I'm running right now, with no skimmer. The halimeda infestation in there is out of control...

I recommend a refugium with plant life to insure the plant life is protected and thriving.

Cyano will be there with our without ro/di. Phosphates come from the bioload (food) as well as the input water.

that's a fairly bold assertion, and one which is impossible to prove

have you kept a tank indefinitely ? :P

Yep.

Yes, I agree. Nothing but Algae, no water changes, no heaters, no skimmer, using Tap water, shop lights, etc will maintain a tank for a long long time. Probably indefinately.

Unfortunately it probably won't maintain corals or most other reef animals very long at all as Beaslbob has proven a few times.
